A well-deserved header goal from a corner kick just before half time gave Hungarian team Videoton FC a sensational 1-0 win over FC Girondins de Bordeaux and a progression into the play off’s of the Europa League.
French side Bordeaux went into the second leg at the Pancho Arena in Felcsut leading 2-1 from the first leg. It was Videoton that began much brighter taking the game to their French opponents from kick off. Bordeaux’s biggest chance came when Sankhare took the ball to the goal line before crossing into the middle for Malcom at the far post, but he missed the target with virtually an open goal to aim for. At the end of the first half, the French team conceded a series of corners, one of which ended in left back Stopira escaping the attentions of Gaëtan Laborde, and heading back across Benoît Costil, sending the ball into the net off the far post (45+5′).
In the second half, Bordeaux tried to push forward but could not create serious chances. Their situation worsened just seconds after the break when Youssouf Sabaly was sent off for a second bookable offence after bringing down Asmir Suljic (46′). However, Hungarian midfielder József Varga was also sent off shortly afterwards (69′) to leave both sides with ten men. The best French effort was a free kick from Toure that Videoton’s goalkepper Kovácsik saved well in the 83rd minute. Videoton also had a chance with striker Danko Lazovic shooting from distance in the 86th minute. The referee added 7 minutes of stoppage time but the Hungarian team held out to produce a memorable evening and a 1-0 win that is enough to take Videoton through to the play off’s.
Videoton head coach Marko Nikolic: “We deserved the win and we deserve to go through, especially based on the home leg. We played tactically and with discipline and I would always like to see this type of Vidi. It is not only a massive result for Videoton, but for Hungarian football that we have made it through past Girondins. We have collected more coefficient points and will go into the play off’s with a similar attitude.”
Bordeaux head coach Jocelyn Gouvernnec: “It is a massive disappointment for us as we really did prepare for the Europa League, but have not made it through. We knew that the qualification games would be hard, and that at this level there are no easy games. Videoton FC and the way they played surprised us.”
Videoton will face Serbian title-holder Partizan Belgrade in the play-off. The first leg will be held on 17th of August in Belgrade, the second leg a week later in Hungary. The stake is high as the winner will reach the group stage of the 2017/2018 Europa League.
