Chelsea welcome high-flying Manchester City to Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening for what is the biggest club match of the weekend anywhere in Europe.
Both clubs are doing well in the Premier League and Champions League and this is a real clash of the titans.
Chelsea are aiming to make a successful defence of the title they won under Antonio Conte last season while Pep Guardiola is attempting to lead Manchester City to their first trophy under his management.
Chelsea come into this match on the back of a massive away in the Champions League. The Blues defeated Atletico Madrid 2-1 in their new stadium, which has go down as one of the biggest results in the Champions League this week.
That result was proceeded by an excellent 4-0 win at Stoke City and Alvaro Morata has taken little time to settle into this role at Stamford Bridge. The Spanish striker scored a hat-trick against Stoke and grabbed Chelsea’s opening goal in Madrid to take his tally to 7 goals this season.
Trends show Chelsea are unbeaten in their last eight games in all competitions and you must go back to the opening day of the Premier League season to find the last time they lost a match. Since that shock defeat to Burnley, Chelsea have won seven and drawn one of their eight competitive games.
At home in the Premier League they have lost only two of their previous nineteen matches and have kept three clean sheets in their last four home games.
Manchester City travel south having recorded a 2-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Etihad Stadium in mid-week. While the match proved to be more difficult than expected, Manchester City got the job done and sit top of their Champions League group.
In the Premier League, Manchester City are yet to taste defeat this season and come into this match sitting top of the table on goal difference from Manchester United.
Manchester City have won five and drawn one of their six Premier League games and while their goal scoring prowess has grabbed the headlines in recent weeks, they have also improved defensively and kept a clean sheet in each of their last three matches.
Trends show Manchester City have lost only one of their last nineteen games in the Premier League and are unbeaten in ten of their last eleven on the road.
Looking ahead to the team news and Chelsea are still without new signing Danny Drinkwater who is injured and David Luiz who is suspended. Pedro is a doubt but Eden Hazard is back to full fitness and should start the match.
Manchester City have a couple of injury problems and Benjamin Mendy is out of the game and could be joined on the sidelines by Vincent Kompany. There have also been reports Sergio Aguero could miss the game with a broken rib, which will be a blow for Guardiola.
This is going to be a cracking game and both teams should score at least one goal. However, with Mendy and Aguero missing for the visitors, it hands Chelsea an advantage and they could hand Manchester City their first defeat of the season.
