On Thursday afternoon, World Cup home nation Russia kick-off their campaign with a game against Saudi Arabia in Moscow.
Russia have not played a competitive game since the Confederations Cup last summer due.
The home nation’s recent results in friendly games have not been great, as they have failed to win in seven outings, suffering four defeats in the process. Last time out Stanislav Cherchesov’s team drew 1-1 against Turkey.
The home team have struggled for goals in those recent friendly games, scoring just six goals in their last seven outings.
Russia’s recent World Cup record is not a good one, as they have failed to win in their last five games at World Cup finals. In fact, since independence, the home side have won just two of their nine group games in the competition.
Everybody connected with the country will be hoping that home advantage can see them qualify for the knockout stages for the first time as Russia.
Saudi Arabia has lost their last three international games, while also conceding at least two goals against Italy, Peru and Germany. Two wins in their last eight international outings illustrate their poor recent form.
The Asian nation has participated in four World Cup finals, winning just two of their 13 games. They have failed to win in their last ten World Cup outings, suffering eight defeats in the process.
A big factor in Saudi Arabia’s poor form has been their leaky defence, as they have conceded at least twice in seven of their last ten games at World Cup finals.
Both teams head into this opening game in poor form. However, Forebet predicts that Russia will kick-off the campaign with a victory in a low scoring game.
